Earth Day: Habitat Helpers

Apr 22, 2021 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

- Free

Join in removing invasive, non-native plant species from Jefferson County Park on Earth Day. Volunteers will learn about invasive species that threaten the Park before engaging in the hands-on work of removing these plants. The program will start at 6:00pm on Thursday, April 22nd. Please meet at the Chapel Studios pond parking lot on the north side of Jefferson County Park.
Work will involve cutting and dragging invasive shrubs. Volunteers will use tools such as handsaws and loppers to cut down invasive plants. Participants can borrow tools or bring their own if they have them. Adults must accompany children. Participants should wear close toed shoes and bring leather gloves.
Why would we remove plants? Some of the beautiful plants in the area are actually harmful to the habitat and ecosystem. Many of these invasive species were introduced to the area. They spread quickly and crowd out the native plant species. Not only does this decrease plant diversity but it also reduces the native food sources wildlife depend on.
The meeting location is off of West Tyler Ave, south of the USDA Service Center located at 605 S 23rd St, Fairfield. Pre-registration is not required. For more information, please contact Brittney Tiller at Naturalist@JeffersonCountyConservation.com or call 472-4421.
