Park Technician/Ranger

Description
The Park Technician/Ranger job is a full-time, permanent position with the Jefferson County Conservation Board. The person in this position, under the general supervision of the Director, will function as a park maintenance person for all Jefferson County Conservation parks, trails and wildlife areas. This person may also perform law enforcement duties in these areas. Non-standard work schedule will include nights, weekends, and holidays during the camping season (May-October).
Examples of Duties
- Manages/Monitors Jefferson County Park’s campground and shelter areas which will require working non-standard work week (nights, weekends, holidays).
- Is responsible for collecting and securing user fees and delivering them to the Conservation Board’s administrative office in a timely manner.
- Performs routine maintenance of park areas, preserves and recreation areas, facilities and equipment.
- Reports problems with facilities, grounds or equipment to the Director.
- Operates various hand and power tools, vehicles and mowing equipment.
- Supervise work done by seasonal employees, volunteers or community service workers when needed.
- Capture, handle, and dispose of sick, injured or nuisance animals.
- Assist with environmental education programs including Hunter Education.
- Performs public relations and law enforcement duties within parks, preserves and recreation areas and at other County sites as needed, providing first aid and emergency assistance as the need arises.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Director.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor of Science degree in the natural sciences from an accredited college or university or a relevant combination of education and work experience.
Iowa Law Enforcement Peace Officer Certification or the ability to be designated a peace officer by the Conservation Board including the ability to pass law enforcement position pre-testing, criminal background investigation, and complete law enforcement training at the ILEA.
Licenses and Certifications: Ability to obtain the following:
Iowa law Enforcement Peace Officer Certification
Basic First Aid and CPR
Commercial Driver license and insurable under County’s insurance policy
Pesticide Applicator License
S-130 and S-190 Fire Training
Residency Requirement:
Must Live in Jefferson County.
Willingness to live in Park Residence at Jefferson County Park preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Current fish, game, and outdoor recreation laws and regulations.
- Grounds, building, and equipment maintenance methods and procedures.
- Plumbing, painting, masonry, electrical and carpentry work.
- Wildlife conservation principles and practices
Ability to:
- Use heavy equipment, power tools, hand tools, and computers.
- Perform Park and wildlife maintenance work.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public.
- Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
Physical and Mental Abilities:
Substantial amount of physical effort and manual dexterity to climb/descend ladders, constant standing and walking, often on ungraded terrain.
Heavy mobility duties are usually performed by frequent walking and/or standing, kneeling, or squatting relieved by lesser periods of sitting or operating a vehicle.
Good vision is required, either uncorrected or corrected through the use of lens.
Physical ability to lift light articles, sometimes weighing up to 50 pounds maximum and carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds, pushing and/or pulling objects weighing up to 50 pounds maximum.
Ability to work without direct supervision.
Working Conditions:
Frequent exposure to dirt, dust, extremes of temperature, and noxious fumes and odors.
Some exposure to hazardous situations which involve exposure to heavy machinery, hazardous chemical, power tools, or wild animals.
Some exposure to hazardous situations relating to law enforcement duties.
Working time will require irregular hours and shift times.
